COVID Community Roots Program

The purpose of the COVID Community Roots Program is to provide support for populations made most vulnerable by the COVID-19 crisis. Through grants up to a maximum of $3,000, Alberta Blue Cross, Alberta Recreation and Parks Association and Communities ChooseWell are partnering to support the social, mental, emotional and physical well-being of populations in rural, remote and secondary communities across Alberta.

COVID Community Roots Program

The purpose of the COVID Community Roots Program is to provide support for populations made most vulnerable by the COVID-19 crisis. Through grants up to a maximum of $3,000, Alberta Blue Cross, Alberta Recreation and Parks Association and Communities ChooseWell are partnering to support the social, mental, emotional and physical well-being of populations in rural, remote and secondary communities across Alberta.

Who is eligible?

Eligible organizations

This grant is specifically for communities outside Edmonton and Calgary, to support grassroots initiatives. Grassroots initiatives are created for the community, by community members, and seek additional support.

Organizations* eligible to apply include the following:

  • Non-profit organizations
  • Charities
  • Municipalities
  • First Nations communities or Métis Settlements

*Unregistered organizations can apply with a sponsor organization who can attest to the applicant’s credibility in the community.

Eligible initiatives

Eligible initiatives must address the mental, physical, social or emotional issues that COVID-19 has created in the lives of their community.

Services can align with one of the following funding priorities:

  • Helping people maintain independence, build resiliency and strengthen their ability to maintain healthy habits.
  • Providing alternative support to help sustain connection and active living for members in the community, such as online supports.
  • Supporting organizations to deliver projects for Albertans who are in need.
  • Coordinating services and programs to address the well-being of Albertans.

How to apply

The COVID Community Roots Program is now closed. Thank you to all who applied.

Budget

Examples of expenses could include the following:

  • Project materials and supplies
  • Elder honorariums
  • Administration
  • Enhancements to existing programs or activities
  • New programs, projects or activities

The following are ineligible expenses:

  • Direct funding for shelter
  • Hospital or medical-related services
  • Capital projects
  • Cost to sustain an organization outside of the initiative in question.

Reporting

Successful applicants will need to sign a Grant Disbursement Form and complete an evaluation report at the end of the grant term. This report must demonstrate that activities were completed and monies spent as described in the agreement. We would greatly appreciate any acknowledgement or recognition you can provide for this grant, whether on social media, through your local paper or by sharing testimonials from program participants. We would also appreciate any photos or quotes you may be able to share with us for use in our social media, annual reports and other promotions of the program.
